People who need care, and pets
What else to think about regarding medication, aids, electricity-dependent devices and pets.
Anyone who depends on care, medication or devices needs more preparation – and others should know how they can help.
Medication
- Supplies for at least ten days; talk to your doctor about a reserve.
- An up-to-date medication plan (with doses) in the document folder and in the emergency bag.
- Medication that must be kept cool, such as insulin: have a cool bag with ice packs ready; do not freeze. Read the package leaflet.
Aids
- Spare glasses, hearing aids with spare batteries, walking aids, incontinence products.
- Think about wheelchairs, rollators and the stairs: How does the person get out of the home in an emergency?
Electricity-dependent devices
Home ventilator, oxygen concentrator, feeding pump, care bed, electric wheelchair:
- Know the battery life and keep spare batteries charged.
- Discuss a plan for power cuts with the care service, doctor and equipment supplier – at what point is the person moved to a hospital?
- Home emergency alarm (Hausnotruf): ask how long the base station works without electricity.
Network
- Neighbours, relatives and the care service should know that help may be needed – and who will take care of it (see Neighbours).
- Enter emergency contacts and important information (diagnoses, allergies) for the person in the family plan.
Pets
- Plan food and water for ten days (the supplies calculator includes dogs and cats).
- Carrier, lead, bowl, medication, vaccination record, a recent photo (in case you need to search for them) and the microchip number.
- Many emergency shelters do not accept animals – clarify in advance who could take in your pet in an emergency.
- Take your animals with you when you evacuate; animals left behind are on their own.
